First impression is Emmerich on a shoestring. If done right, I still think it might be the kind of dumb fun the disaster genre seems to specialize in.
- [The Last Voyage (1960)](https://disastermovieworld.com/2009/09/20/the-last-voyage-1960/) - "How much EXCITEMENT can explode in 91 minutes?" asks the trailer. Well, not that much, to be honest. The Last Voyage has some nice moments but is overall a rather pedestrian affair as disaster movies go.
- [The Poseidon Adventure (1972)](https://disastermovieworld.com/2009/09/13/the-poseidon-adventure-1972/) - One of the classic disaster movies of the 1970's, The Poseidon Adventure, starring Gene Hackman, is still one of the best in the genre.
- [The Towering Inferno (1974)](https://disastermovieworld.com/2009/09/06/the-towering-inferno-1974/) - So here it is, the film that is arguably the major classic of the disaster movie genre. Certainly, The Towering Inferno is the finest example of the 70's style of disaster cinema: big all-star cast, multiple storylines, a spectacular central event, and an all-around massive production (Inferno was at the time the biggest film produced on the 20th Century Fox lot by virtue of its 57 sets and four camera crews.)
- [Volcano (1997)](https://disastermovieworld.com/2009/07/26/volcano-1997/) - Preceded by Dante's Peak, Volcano was "the other" volcano movie of 1997. It is by far the dumbest of the two. It is also, by far, the most entertaining. Volcano serves up loads of quite good looking lava porn at a brisk pace, turning downtown L.A. into a flaming hell.
- [Earthquake (1974)](https://disastermovieworld.com/2009/04/21/earthquake-1974/) - It's Charlton Heston versus a huge earthquake in this 1974 disaster movie classic.
- [Titanic (1997)](https://disastermovieworld.com/2009/04/12/titanic-1997/) - Though rarely referred to as a genre flick - and if so, most often categorized as a romance - the biggest movie in the world is nothing but a very, very expensive disaster movie. Yes, that would be James Cameron's Titanic, which not only became the highest-grossing movie ever to date but also scooped the Oscars with 11 wins, giving Cameron himself opportunity to proclaim himself "king of the world". Whatever you might think of this film - and as celebrated as it is it does have its detractors - you can't argue with the craftsmanship.
- [Deep Impact (1998)](https://disastermovieworld.com/2009/03/22/deep-impact-1998/) - Deep Impact is "the other asteroid movie" of 1998, even though it was released before Armageddon. Sporting a smaller budget and a bigger cast, it is the more restrained of the two, though not necessarily a hugely superior picture. Personally, I do like this one better, even though it is severely underdeveloped in the disaster scene department.
- [Armageddon (1998)](https://disastermovieworld.com/2009/03/22/armageddon-1998/) - A big hit at the box-office, Michael Bay's Armageddon certainly doesn't score many points for subtlety or realism. Nor is it very successful as a disaster movie.
- [When Worlds Collide (1951)](https://disastermovieworld.com/2009/03/07/when-worlds-collide-1951/) - How about a bona fide Oscar winner? When Worlds Collide, produced by George Pal and directed by Rudolph Maté, who also made the classic noir D.O.A., won the special effects category at the 1952 Academy Awards. And there's no doubt that the miniature work featured in the film's climactic catastrophe sequence is the absolute highlight of this minor sci-fi classic.
- [Cloverfield (2008)](https://disastermovieworld.com/2009/03/07/cloverfield-2008/) - As a modernisation of the disaster movie genre, Cloverfield is interesting and thrilling, with quite a bit of spectacular destruction going on.
- [Destination: Infestation (2007)](https://disastermovieworld.com/2009/03/07/destination-infestation-2007/) - Destination: Infestation is a Canadian made-for-TV ripoff of Snakes on a Plane, but with ants. It's stupid. It's crap. It's fun if you're drunk or just in the mood for something ridiculous.
- [The Day After Tomorrow (2004)](https://disastermovieworld.com/2009/03/07/the-day-after-tomorrow-2004/) - Roland Emmerich's The Day After Tomorrow has taken quite a bit of flak for being scientifically preposterous. But if you want a well-reasoned and credible discussion about climate change, may I suggest An Inconvenient Truth or something similar? Meanwhile, if you want to see giant waves drench New York City and equally huge tornadoes ripping Los Angeles to shreds, here's a movie for you.
